Sweet Shrub: A Native with Scent and Style
One of our favorite native shrubs at Bayview this season is Calycanthus floridus, commonly known as Sweet Shrub. With its deep maroon, fragrant flowers and aromatic green foliage, this deciduous shrub adds richness, texture, and multi-sensory appeal to shade and woodland gardens from April through July.
A native of the southeastern U.S., Sweet Shrub grows to 6 to 10 feet tall and thrives in part-shade or dappled sunlight, making it an ideal fit for understory plantings, mixed native borders, or as a focal point near seating areas where its signature scent can truly be enjoyed. Its flowers emit a spicy-sweet aroma, often compared to hints of clove or overripe fruit—adding a unique layer to any sensory-focused landscape.
It’s also a tough and versatile plant. Sweet Shrub can survive a range of light conditions, though it tends to prefer a bit of shade, especially in hotter regions. With its upright, branching form and long bloom window, it offers reliable structure and seasonal interest with minimal fuss.
