Twisted Ridge
Craryville, New York
This mountain-top retreat in Craryville, New York, stands as a testament to our core values, showcasing a profound connection between design and the natural world. Our early collaboration with the architect on this new construction for an interior designer client was pivotal, allowing us to strategically site the main house and guest house to optimize panoramic views, harness the sun's natural path, and thoughtfully navigate the existing geological outcroppings.

Once the home’s precise location and elevation were established, our focus shifted to integrating amenity spaces with a light touch, as if gently placed upon this tranquil peak. The main house and guest house form a natural "courtyard," opening onto the spectacular vista offered by the site, with a pool environment seamlessly blending into the landscape. Our goal was to achieve a minimal ecological footprint while maximizing the experience of the stunning surroundings. Notably, excavated shale from the home, pool, and seating area construction was repurposed within gabion baskets, forming essential retaining walls and grounding the new buildings in place.
The landscape design features an extensive palette of native plants, meticulously selected to blend seamlessly with the existing ecosystem. Species like Cornus florida provide crucial wildlife habitat with their flowers and berries, while the vibrant fall color of Fothergilla gardenii enhances seasonal beauty. Adaptable Myrica pensylvanica enriches the soil and supports birds, and Baptisia australis offers a vital nectar source for pollinators. Even the groundcover of Anemone canadensis contributes to the ecological balance. These plantings evoke a sense of inherent belonging, offering inhabitants the calming presence of flora perfectly suited to its environment. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these native species require minimal water and maintenance, further reducing the project's overall ecological impact.
Whether enjoying a breathtaking sunset from the hot tub or stargazing by the fire pit, the profound connection between this retreat and its natural setting is palpable. This project embodies a harmonious balance between human comfort and environmental stewardship, creating a sanctuary that feels both designed and inherently part of the mountain.
