Thrill Rise

Woodbury, NY

After designing and overseeing the front yard landscape architecture in the early 2000’s, the same homeowner called us back 15 years later to design and install a natural pool environment on a 20′ vertical slope in the backyard

While some might opt for the straightforward approach of siting the pool at the top or bottom of the slope, Bayview opted to make this huge, unusable slope into an asset and sited the pool in the middle. We created a balanced “cut and fill” for all soil by cutting into the hillside, so none had to be trucked in or out during construction.

The slope provides a progression of entertaining spaces as you descend from the home. The first is an Ipe wood deck with a cable railing and outdoor kitchen. Down a few steps sits an inviting brick-paved fire lounge with seating for 8. From there, natural stone slab steps weave through the lush landscape to the pool area below. Guests can opt for the express route and plunge into the pool via a 40′ long custom fiberglass slide!

Those continuing on foot enjoy the seasonal blooms and textures of the hydrangea, roses, ornamental grasses, spirea, vitex, nepeta, astilbe, and more. Enjoy a soak in the elevated spa with water cascading into the pool, or appreciate that same water cascade from the wet ledge with submerged loungers on the other side of the pool. Well-appointed landscape lighting facilitates safe navigation in the evening and highlights the many landscape specimens throughout the garden.
