There are limited opportunities to give back to an institution that has given your family so much and we are thrilled to say we were able to do that for PS 6 (Public School 6) on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. When the PTA of my daughters school asked if Bayview Landscape Architecture could help “take back” their out of control streetscape and roof garden we were more than happy to donate our time pro bono to do so!
Over the course of a few days our team was able to prune, stake, clean and transplant to restore this beacon of the community to past garden glory. Located at the corner of 81st Street and Madison Avenue, the streetscape gardens are appreciated by local residents and tourists on the way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art alike. Look no further than the gallery image of a gentleman moved to photograph a bed of flowers that caught his eye! The rooftop garden houses the school’s amazing and unique Eco-Center where students get to take science classes and learn about natural plant cycles and sustainability through gardening, composting and rain water harvesting.
A highlight of my daughter’s time at PS 6 was making fresh salsa from exclusively rooftop grow ingredients! We were able to get the fruit trees, flowering trees, vegetables, grape vines and shrubs back under control with some TLC for the next wave of students to appreciate and learn from. Thank you PS 6 for the amazing six years you gave my family and I take every opportunity I can to pass by and enjoy your beautiful gardens!
